Researchers at Northwestern University believe they can explain what Darwin could not: why the reason for the ornamentation some animals possess at their own risk. Through mathematical modeling animals across species were shown to have expressed exaggerated ornamentation to attract the opposite sex while putting their lives at risk ( the study cites deer fighting - their antlers knotting for example ).
